WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GEARBOX TUNING?
Gearbox Tuning Explained: What It Does, Why It Matters & What We Support
When people think about tuning their car the engine ECU is normally the first thing that comes to mind. More power, more torque and a completely different driving experience. But on an automatic car there is another control unit playing a huge part in how that power actually reaches the road. The gearbox TCU.
The engine and gearbox are constantly communicating with each other. You can have a really well calibrated engine, but if the gearbox software is still working around the original factory torque limits, shift strategies and behaviour, you aren't necessarily getting the best overall package. That’s where gearbox tuning comes in.
What does gearbox tuning actually change?
Modern automatic gearboxes are controlled by their own TCU (Transmission Control Unit). Just like the engine ECU, it contains software that controls how the gearbox behaves. Depending on the gearbox and platform, tuning can allow us to alter areas such as shift speed, shift points, torque limitations, torque management, kickdown behaviour, throttle response and how the gearbox behaves across the different driving modes. It isn't simply about making every gear change as aggressive as possible.
A good gearbox calibration should work alongside the engine calibration and suit the car. For a road car, that can mean keeping normal driving smooth and comfortable while making Sport mode considerably more responsive when you actually want it.
Why tune the gearbox alongside the engine?
Once we increase the power and torque produced by the engine, the factory gearbox calibration doesn't suddenly know we've done it.
The TCU is still operating around parameters designed for the standard car. Depending on the platform, this can mean factory torque limitations remain in place or the gearbox requests reductions in engine torque because it believes certain limits have been exceeded.
By calibrating the engine and gearbox together we can make sure the two control units are working with each other rather than against each other. The difference isn't necessarily something that can be demonstrated purely with a bigger horsepower number on a dyno graph either. It is something you feel when driving the car.
Gear changes can feel cleaner and more decisive, the gearbox can react faster when you ask for power and the car can spend more time in the correct gear rather than constantly trying to prioritise the factory settings. For many automatic cars, gearbox tuning is one of the modifications that makes the biggest difference to how the finished car actually feels.
Faster doesn't mean harsher
There is sometimes an assumption that a tuned gearbox means every shift needs to bang through the car. That's not what we're trying to achieve. Increasing shift speed can actually make a gear change feel cleaner because the gearbox spends less time completing the shift. The important part is controlling how that happens and managing the torque correctly during the change. Just like our engine tuning, we're not interested in changing something simply because the software allows us to. The calibration still needs to make sense for the gearbox, the engine and how the vehicle is being used.
Our custom gearbox tuning
We offer our own gearbox tuning across a number of MINI, BMW and Volvo applications, including:
- 6-speed Aisin automatic gearboxes
- 8-speed Aisin automatic gearboxes
- 7-speed DCT applications
- DSG
- Various supported BMW automatic gearbox platforms
Coverage does depend on the exact vehicle, gearbox, TCU and software version. This is particularly important on newer models, from around November 2020 onwards the TCUs became locked from factory. This can prevent us from accessing the TCU to modify its calibration, even though we may be able to tune the engine ECU. So if you're unsure whether your gearbox can be tuned, send us your registration and vehicle details and we can check the options available for your particular car.
DSG gearbox tuning
DSG gearboxes are another platform where TCU tuning can make a significant difference, particularly when the engine has also been tuned. The factory DSG software contains its own torque limits, shift strategies, clutch pressure control and gearbox protection parameters. Once engine torque is increased, these can become increasingly relevant. Depending on the particular DSG gearbox, software version and vehicle, tuning can allow changes to areas including torque limits, clutch pressure, shift speed, shift points, launch control behaviour and how the gearbox responds in its different driving modes.
Again the aim isn't simply to make everything as aggressive as possible. The gearbox calibration needs to complement the engine tune and the intended use of the car while retaining the protection strategies we want to keep in place. As with all gearbox tuning, DSG support is dependent on the exact gearbox, TCU and software version, so compatibility needs to be checked before booking.
What about xHP?
On supported BMW/ZF applications, xHP is another option.
xHP is third party transmission software which the customer can purchase directly. It offers developed transmission calibrations for a large range of supported vehicles and gearboxes. If your vehicle is supported by xHP and you're already booked in with us for engine tuning, you're welcome to purchase the required xHP software/licence beforehand and we can flash it to the vehicle for you free of charge while the car is with us. The important distinction is that xHP isn't our own gearbox calibration, we're flashing software supplied through xHP.
Our custom gearbox tuning where available, is calibrated by us and allows us to work with the transmission software alongside the engine calibration. We'll always explain which option is available and appropriate for your particular vehicle rather than simply selling gearbox software for the sake of it.
Engine and gearbox tuning as a package
Where gearbox tuning is available we generally recommend considering it alongside engine tuning rather than treating the two completely separately.
The engine ECU controls the power.
The gearbox TCU controls a huge part of how that power is delivered.
Getting both working together can completely change the way an automatic car drives without needing to chase unnecessary headline figures. As always what we can do depends on the exact vehicle in front of us. Different model years, transmissions and software versions have different limitations, which is why we check compatibility before booking gearbox tuning.
If you'd like to know what is available for your MINI, BMW or Volvo, send us your registration along with your current modifications and what you're looking to achieve and we'll talk you through the options.
Benefits
Improved Shift Speed
- Faster gear changes reduce lag between shifts.
- Results in a more responsive driving experience, especially in sportier driving or track use.
Better Performance
- Optimised shift points mean the engine stays in its power band longer.
- This can improve acceleration and make the car feel quicker without increasing engine power directly.
Enhanced Throttle Response
- Tuned gearboxes often pair with improved throttle maps.
- This creates a more immediate response when you press the accelerator.
Increased Gear Holding
- Tuning can allow the car to hold gears longer before upshifting, useful for engine braking or spirited driving.
- Reduces unwanted short shifting in performance settings.
Torque Management Adjustments
- Gearbox tuning can reduce or eliminate excessive torque limits in lower gears, unlocking more of the engine’s potential earlier.
Better Compatibility with Engine Tunes
- If you've had/having an ECU remap or power upgrade, matching the gearbox tune ensures harmonised performance and avoids gear hunting.
